UNHCR Convoy Faces Difficulties to Deliver Aid to IDPs
The UNHCR (The UN Refugee Agency) aid convoy which have arrived in Mindat is facing difficulties to go to IDP camps.
“As far as we know, they gave aid to just three places which are Myo Oo monastery, Roman Catholic Church and Myoma Baptist Church. Those are inside the town. I don’t know the details of the trip. Places where IDPs stay are now difficult to access. There may be other reasons. I don’t know exactly because I didn’t attend the meeting,” said a township head to MPA.
UNHCR aid convoy arrived in Mindat with a six-wheeler and a 12-wheeler with aid supplies for 5000 people.
When they arrived, the military did not allow entrance to foreigner staffers, only Myanmar native officials were allowed with a restriction to not go beyond the town, a Mindat official told MPA on July 19.
When the military spokesperson Zaw Min Tun could not be reached regarding the UNHCR convoy, we contacted major Aung Ko Ko, military’s in charge person in Mindat. He said,”I don’t know about it. I am away on duty.”
Despite the UNHCR’s announcement to distribute the aid for the whole week and after they were not allowed to visit the IDP camps, there were rumors that they would return with the aid, but MPA could not confirm this yet.
Regarding that issue, a Mindat township head also said he did not know about it exactly.
In Mindat, due to intense military clashes between the local defense forces and the military, thousands are fleeing the war.
Even though there are eight IDP camps in the town for 200 in each, thousands are hiding far away from the town. They are also in desperate need of food, medicines, protective equipment and basic needs.
